Leadership models and significant improvements in prevention and fire policies? All these themes will be open to discussion at the 8th International Wildland Fire Conference
After years of being fatigued by the severe consequences of fire, Portugal is taking the lead in the international commitment to defence of forests, through the promotion of international cooperation in the forest fire management – our country will host the International Wildland Fire Conferences.
Organised by the International Liaison Committee (the Portuguese edition is in charge by AGIF – Integrated Management of Rural Fires Agency and the Portuguese Republic, with the high sponsorship of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The chosen venue was Alfândega do Porto, from the 16th to 19 May 2023.
The varied programme will welcome more than 1200 participants from all over the world, as well as more than 500 scientific papers submitted, made by world reference experts in fire prevention and suppression. So far, many leading voices in the sector have been confirmed, among them:
• Stephen Pyne – Fire Historian, Urban Farmer and Professor
• Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University, USA
• Toddi Steelman – Stanback Dean at the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University
• Richard de Neufville – Professor of Systems Engineering at the Institute for Data, Systems and Society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Massachusetts Institute of Technology
In parallel, will also be presented several cultural activities such as the video projection “And Beneath It All Flows Liquid Fire” (2019) by Swiss artist Julian Charrière and two installations “Fogo” and “Da Terra Acesa” (2018) by the duo of OPorto artists Rita Castro Neves and Daniel Moreira Still, at Alfândega do Porto, on May 18 at 6 p.m. will be launched the Portuguese edition of “O Piroceno” (Ziguarte Livros) by Stephen Pyne that will serve as mote to a conversation about fire in the perspective of history and philosophy with the author, Viriato Soromenho Marques and Carlos Vaz Marques.
CoLAB ForestWISE is institutional partner of the 8th IWFC – International Wildland Fire Conference 2023, in which it will co-organize in collaboration with the Centre de Ciència i Tecnologia Forestal de Catalunya, CTFC, a FIRE-RES workshop on innovative solutions for fire resilient territories. This conference will also have a space dedicated to the rePLANT project, co-ordinated by our CoLAB, to demonstrate the products and services generated within this mobilizing project. As part of the pre-event initiatives of the eighth IWFC and open to all participants, CoLAB ForestWISE, together with REN, one of its associates, organises on the 15th May at 4pm, a technical visit to the Serras do Porto Park. Finally, the Scientific Committee of the International Wildland Fire Conference 2023 also includes the participation of some members of our CoLAB team: Abílio Pereira Pacheco, Ana Sá and Paulo Fernandes are part of this range of invited experts.
