A Canadian expert is coming to Portugal next week to talk about how rural communities can be prepared for fires. “We want to get the message across that they have to start taking care of their own home in order to make it more resilient to fire”, he explains in an interview with Expresso. The coordination between authorities and communities is essential and, he recalls, that was what allowed to evacuate 80,000 people surrounded by fire in Fort McMurray in 2017.
