The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) launched the Mobilising R&D Programme for the Prevention and Suppression of Forest Fires (PCIF) with the aim of fostering research focused on addressing concrete challenges in the prevention and suppression of rural fires. This programme resulted in the funding of 56 projects, with a total investment of approximately €15 million.

To amplify the impact of this research, FCT, together with CoLAB ForestWISE, established a monitoring structure that developed and implemented a methodology for results assessment and societal impact analysis. Throughout this process of productive interaction with researchers and stakeholders—during which the main challenges of applied research for maximising impact were explored—a cross-cutting difficulty was consistently identified: the translation of the potential of generated knowledge and innovation into tangible benefits for society.

In this context, and building on the results of the Impact Assessment of the Mobilising R&D Programme for the Prevention and Suppression of Forest Fires (PCIF), CoLAB ForestWISE developed a Policy Brief that brings together recommendations aimed at strengthening a more impact-oriented R&D&I ecosystem.

By presenting policy recommendations focused on aligning the public agenda, science, and innovation policies, this Policy Brief invites not only policy-makers but also the wider community to reflect on concrete actions that can foster a stronger impact culture, supported by strategic instruments that promote knowledge and technology transfer.
