R&D&I AGENDA
A vision for the future of forests and wildfires
The Strategic R&D&I Agenda for Forest and Fire Management 2025–2030 is the guiding document for CoLAB ForestWISE’s activities over the coming years. Developed through a collaborative process, it identifies the priority areas for research, development, innovation, and knowledge and technology transfer, aligned with the challenges facing the forest sector and the main national and European public policies.
A collaborative effort
This Agenda builds on the revision of the strategic document that guided CoLAB ForestWISE’s activities since 2019. Its update draws on the experience gained over recent years, an assessment of the national and European strategic landscape, and a participatory process involving more than 50 representatives from companies, public administration bodies, higher education institutions, research centres, and other organisations across the forest sector.
This process made it possible to identify emerging challenges, innovation opportunities, and priority needs, ensuring that the Agenda responds to the expectations of the different stakeholders involved in forest and fire management.
Structure of the Agenda
The Agenda is organised around seven strategic themes, divided into 23 priority sub-themes, which define CoLAB ForestWISE’s main areas of activity for the 2025–2030 period.
The first four themes address challenges directly related to forest and landscape management.
Promoting sustaintable, multifunctional, and resilient forests, enhancing the valorisation of ecosystem services and biodiversity protection
Developing strategies and actions for the prevention and mitigation of rural fires and other biotic risks, with a focus on assessing their impact.
Enhancing the valorisation of new (bio)products and forest-based business models, driving digital transition and sector competitiveness.
Promoting initiatives anchored in the visions and expectations of local stakeholders, reinforcing social, economic, and territorial cohesion.
Developing and adopting innovative solutions to increase management efficiency and the competitiveness of the forest sector.
Supporting decision-making and the (co)design of more informed and robust public policies, based on participatory and collaborative approaches.
Strengthening communication, knowledge transfer, training, and capacity building on forest and fire-related issues.
These are complemented by three cross-cutting themes that reinforce the sector’s capacity for innovation and transformation.
